Beef and Italian Sausage Jumbo Shell Bake

Josh loves sharing stories with me on how his Grandma made the best pasta that he has ever had. Italian cooking was one of her specialties. Although I did not have a chance to meet her, it feels like I am getting to know her through the stories that Josh and his mom share with me about her. Josh has shared some tips with me on how Italian cooking should be in which he learned from his Grandma. Since Italian food is a big part of Josh’s life I decided to cook up a meat & cheesy pasta dish for dinner. This is simple to make and great served with garlic bread.

Prep & Cook Time: 55 minutes

Servings: 5

  • 21 Jumbo shells

  • 1 pound ground beef

  • 1 package hot Italian ground sausage

  • 4 tablespoon Italian Herb Seasoning

  • 2 tablespoon crushed red pepper flakes

  • 1/2 cup shredded parmesan cheese for filling

  • 1/2 cup shredded parmesan cheese for topping

  • 2 eggs

  • 8 oz fresh mozzarella, cut in 1/4 inch size

  • 1 can Hunt’s Pasta Sauce, Roasted Garlic & Onion

  • Salt for taste

  • 2 tablespoon Olive Oil

  • 3 tablespoon parsley

  1. Pre-heat oven at 425 degrees Fahrenheit.

  2. Boil 4 quarters of water with a tablespoon olive oil. Add jumbo shells with salt for taste. Stir occasionally and cook for 10 minutes. When pasta is cooked, drain water and let cool on a baking sheet.

  3. While pasta is cooking, in a 13×9 baking dish spread about a cup of pasta sauce to cover the bottom of the baking dish.

  4. In a medium pan, heat a tablespoon of olive oil over medium-high heat. Add and crumble the ground beef and ground sausage. Mix in Italian herb seasoning, red pepper flakes and salt for taste. Cook until meat is browned to give it a crunch. Drain excess oil and set aside to cool for about 5 minutes.

  5. In a medium bowl, mix eggs and parmesan cheese. Mix in meat until all ingredients are combined thoroughly.

  6. Fill each shell with about 1 1/2-2 teaspoon of the filling. Place each filled shell in the baking dish in a single layer. Sprinkle the left over filling over the pasta. Pour the left over pasta sauce over the pasta. Sprinkle with parmesan cheese and spread pieces of mozzarella evenly over pasta. Top with parsley.

  7. Cover baking dish with foil and place in oven. Cook for 30 minutes. Serve with garlic bread.

    1. It can be salty and that’s why I don’t add salt to it anymore. Sauce from a jar just makes it quick and easy. Would love to hear and learn about your pasta sauce from scratch ๐Ÿ˜
